Links of Sustainable Energy Technologies (SET) with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Access to energy enables income generation, employment, food production and in addition apply energy efficiency will left the family with more money to expend on buying food or set up a small business
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education Lighting and electricity increases education opportunities such evening classes for adults and children who are busy during the day.
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women Energy efficient stove and clean cooking fuels reduces exposure to indoor air pollution, and access to energy enable women to attend evening classes and street lighting provides safety, etc.
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality Renewable energy such as solar and Wind enables pumped clean water and purification and in addition energy efficient stove and clean cooking reduce ear and eye problems, breathlessness, chest pain, headaches and giddiness due to smoke from cooking, so reduce child mortality.
Goal 5: Improve maternal health Energy services needed to provide access to clean water and better health facilities.
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Energy services needed to provide access to better health facilities. In addition renewable energy enable to store vaccines in rural areas and transport to and from health centres. Health services could be operational in the evening, also clean water and environment reduce diseases.
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability Apply energy efficiency measure enable less use of fossil fuel resources, reduce local (and indoor) pollution and green house gas emissions.
Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development New technology , such as solar photovoltaic and biofuel will improve poor people’s access to energy services, require a adequate partnership between institutional, political and academe in addition knowledge and skills are often more important, therefore to solve many energy issues will required a Global Partnership.
